What does the Bible teach about the Trinity?
Have you ever wondered, “What is God actually like?”
-Definition of the TRINITY“God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God”. (Wayne Grudem)
-The word trinity is never found in the bible, but the teaching is all ___throughout_ scripture
Hints of the Trinity from the Old Testament
-Genesis 1:26- God said, “Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness.”
-Jewish rabbis throughout the ages have suggested that it’s similar to when a king speaks in 3rd person
-Other Jewish teachers taught that God was speaking to angels
In light of the New Testament, we see clearly that this is a _______conversation__________ between the different persons of the Godhead
-Genesis 3:22 “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil”.
-Genesis 11:7 “Come, let us go down and there confuse their language”.
-Isaiah 6:8 “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”.
-Psalm 45:6-7 “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever….You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy”.
-How many persons are being called God here? (_2_____)
-The throne will last “forever and ever” implying eternality
**Hebrews 1:8-9 interprets Psalm 45:6-7**
-Who does the author of Hebrews tell us this is talking about? (the ________Son______)
-Isaiah 63:10 says that God’s people “rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit”. This suggests…
-the Holy Spirit is distinct from God himself
-emotional characteristics of a distinct person
-Deut. 6:4-5 “Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
As we look at the teaching of the Trinity, keep this is mind:
-God is only one being. There are not 3 Gods. There is only one God. (Digging Deeper Ex. 15:11, Isa. 45:5-6, Isa. 45:21-22)
-The bible never tells us to believe a contradiction
-This is a mystery or a paradox clearly taught in scripture
-We will always be ______finite_____ and there will be things we never fully understand
-Allow this truth to humble us and cause us to worship more deeply
